FUSION: New Student Orientation 2008

Saturday, August 30

Tuesday, September 2

Welcome New EMU Students!

For four amazing days starting Saturday, August 30, thousands will converge on Ypsilanti. They’ll come from all over the United States, even around the world. The impact? A rare collective energy, a synergy that happens when diverse lives meet with determined dreams. That is what we call Fusion.

Our research shows that one of the best indicators of long-term success at EMU is attending Fusion. New student Orientation is so vital, we’ve made is as much an institution as graduation. Fusion is a mandatory four-day program for all incoming freshmen. The fee of $200 is automatically billed your student account, regardless of attendance. The fee covers all costs of Orientation (all program supplies, meals and transportation, as well as the picnic lunch and family program on Saturday).

Our commitment to helping you succeed begins the minute you set foot on campus, where new friends, faculty and staff are instrumental in helping you clarify your goals and realize your vision. The entire four-day program is designed with both commuter and residential students in mind. While resident students move into their campus housing on Saturday, commuter students will travel back and forth to Orientation just as you will during the school year.

CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDANCE

Orientation is a mandatory program; however, we ask that students confirm their attendance, particularly to help us with the guest count on Saturday. Once you complete your online confirmation, you will receive a response via email. Below is a brief sample of what to expect during Fusion. You will find more details in the forthcoming months on our website and in the large Fusion mailing that you will receive in July.

FUSION OVERVIEW

  • Day 1 – Saturday, Aug.30
  • It’s all about becoming part of the EMU family. In the morning residential students move into their halls while commuters enjoy a program designed especially for them. We host a family picnic and then families can choose from a rich array of sessions designed to answer questions about first year success while students take part in Eastern Expectations. We conclude the family portion of Orientation where families and students say their fond farewells. Students remain on campus and form their Orientation small groups and learn what’s in store for the remainder of their program.

  • Day 2 – Sunday, Aug. 31
  • This day will help students learn the ins and outs of academic life including working with professors, maximizing study time and utilizing support services. The day concludes with a variety of interactive activities designed to help students meet others, take care of last minute University business, as well has have fun.

  • Day 3 – Monday, Sept. 1
  • Students will learn more about the EMU community and all it has to offer. Students will find out about getting involved in clubs, organizations, community service, study abroad, intramural sports, on-campus jobs and much more.

  • Day 4 – Tuesday, Sept. 2
  • This day is designed to help students learn about the larger Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor Community; through programs like, Community Plunge, a volunteer experience and Fit for Fun, a walk/jog around campus. Later students enjoy YpsiFest where local establishments welcome and feed students, on us of course!

EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY CREED

Interwoven within the four days of Fusion is the Eastern Michigan University Creed. The Creed is a statement of beliefs about how we live, learn and work together in this community. Fusion will involve programs and events that highlight the four key concepts of the Creed – Integrity, Respect, Education and Relationships.

  • We believe in the Integrity of our work and the Respect we show for our fellow students, faculty, alumni and staff are an integral part of our ongoing Education.
  • We believe the Relationships we have and those we continue to develop will support us as we learn to grow together as a community
